A PDM/PLM system has become indispensable for engineers – also because of the growing complexity of products. PDM systems are also the basis for a holistic PLM strategy that goes beyond engineering and integrates the whole company, connecting people and processes. According to experts, a good handle on the product lifecycle is prerequisite for digital transformation. However, many companies already fail to successfully implement PLM. I am currently conducting a research with the Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen about the understanding of PLM in organizations. The survey seeks to address both, companies that have and that have not implemented a PLM strategy and is targeted at e.g. designers, engineers, (after) sales, PLM directors and managers.
