The Lihir mine site experiences ground temperatures of up to 190˚C and has chemically reactive geology. As a result of the extreme ground temperatures, conventional ammonium nitrate based explosives, which are typically used in the blasting process, become less controllable and less reliable.Newcrest is looking for solutions that can mitigate the impact of elevated temperatures on blasting operations. Your solution might include:• New formulas or designs of bulk blasting agents• New methods or improvements to the current blasting process• Novel approaches to insulate or mitigate the temperature effects on blasting• Engineering, chemical or other novel solutionsThis challenge invites individuals, teams and organisations, with viable solutions to improve the safety and reliability of blasting in elevated temperatures.
