Career advice - Ops or PM?

I'm an early 30s mining engineer. I've spent the last ten years working in junior exploration companies, doing resource estimates, PEAs and feasibility studies, but never worked in an operating mine - though I've visited many. I've been in a project management role lately focused on feasibility studies and permitting, with the idea of eventually switching to development. My long-term goals are to get a Master's degree then move into consulting, with a focus on resources and feasibility studies.I have the opportunity to switch to a long-term planning role at an operating mine. I feel like this would help fill a big gap in my experience and be helpful to my long-term goals. What do you think? Would you recommend taking the job?

  • Fully agree with Vince Suntner, practical experience in operations is essential to increase your credibility

  • Absolutely, take the job, even if the pay is less. You need a really solid grounding in the physical world to ever be effective at planning and management roles. It lets you shine, where others are more vulnerable to important judgement errors.
