Automatic bolt detection: a technology for safer mines
Is your mine as safe as you think it is?

Bolting patterns are designed for optimal support of mining drifts and to maintain safe spaces underground. However, disparities between the design and installation can render bolting inefficient and, sometimes, dangerous. Visual inspection by humans is currently the only tool available for verifying pattern conformity, but this task is both strenuous and time-consuming.

Safety is a priority for Nemesis

Motivated to reduce the risk associated with wrongfully installed bolting, Nemesis launched a project which aims to detect bolts automatically in images of galleries. The approach successfully developed by Nemesis can detect bolt positioning as well as bolt types on drift walls.

Bolt detection, useful for…

Various use cases can arise from Nemesis’ new technology. Bolting pattern validation, drift converging movement, assessment are only a few examples of possible uses of the technology. For what purpose would you use this technology yourself? Feel free to share in the comment section

What are the benefits for your mine?

First and foremost, additional security is the greatest benefit brought forward by the technology. It will allow us to assess a mine’s security level in a fast and automated manner. Furthermore, cost reduction is expected as the bolt installation process can now be assessed for conformity in real-time, eliminating redoes, and unnecessary bolt installation.
