Stope Design Research: The GAGS-Project

Dear Mining Industry Professionals,

My name is Sebastian Pontow, I am a Master´s student of the European Mining Course (EMC), currently writing my master thesis as part of the “Geophysical and Geochemical Methods for Stope Design” (GAGS) project, an international research project in cooperation between Aalto University (Finland), TU Delft (Netherlands), University of A Coruña (Spain) and University of Vigo (Spain).

The purpose of the GAGS-project is to improve the stope designing process by developing and implementing novel geophysical and geochemical methods. Therefore, the geochemical LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) is used to assess the chemical composition, geometallurgical properties and mineralogical data of the ore. While in-situ borehole geophysics are used to gather more detailed data about stope-scale fractures and discontinuities.

In order to guide the research project more adequately, it is essential to gather a state-of-the-art overview of the stope designing methods currently applied in the industry.

Thus, I would like to ask you for your help. Either by answering this questionnaire yourself or forwarding this questionnaire to a colleague of yours who is familiar with the stope designing process.

You find the questionnaire here:

It consists of 17 questions and will only take about 10 minutes to answer.

Your answers will be treated confidentially, and results from the questionnaire will be analyzed and evaluated in an anonymized form only.

Your help will actively assist an international research project and help advance mining science itself.

With best regards and a kind Glückauf
