“Building an inclusive and equitable battery metals sector in the heart of Africa”

Driven by the demand for batteries and electric vehicles in a transparent and open environment, the continent welcomes the new DRC-Africa Battery Metals Forum: a specialised event that will gather high-level representatives from the entire battery metals industry value chain from 12–13 September 2023.

Battery metals and minerals include cobalt, copper, lithium, nickel, graphite, manganese, rare earths and the 3Ts (tin, tantalum and tungsten). The DRC-Africa Battery Metals Forum will take place in Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC where about 68% of the world’s cobalt is mined.

DRC-Africa Battery Metals Forum is committed to positioning DRC as the African hub for battery metals production and manufacture. It is about creating wealth for the entire DRC and African battery metals industry value chain,” says event director Sam Madlabane.

VUKA Group CEO David Ashdown states that: “the forum will provide a prime engagement platform and meeting place for government, mining companies, key stakeholders, technology and service providers and end users to facilitate dialogue in defining and building a new extractive sector of the industry in the DRC. In addition, it is important to build an inclusive and equitable battery metals industry in the heart of Africa, underpinning broad-based sustainable growth, local beneficiation and socio-economic development.”

Flagship events
The DRC-Africa Battery Metals Forum forms part of the already impressive mining portfolio of the VUKA Group (formerly Clarion Events Africa), with long-running flagship events, such as DRC Mining Week and Nigeria Mining Week, which was recently held to record numbers in Abuja, as well as Mining Review Africa, a leading industry magazine and online news platform.

The event will comprise a two-day conference and there are various sponsorship opportunities for sector leaders to promote their sustainable mining industry practices to government officials, key leaders and decision-makers. AVZ Minerals Limited has already been confirmed as the cobalt plus sponsor.

Mining Minister Adegbite: “Now is the time to be one of the pioneers in Nigerian mining”

The mining sector globally has welcomed the return of the Nigeria’s leading industry event on the calendar: Nigeria Mining Week will be back in-person at the Abuja International Conference Centre from 1–3 November 2022. After two years of digital connection, the entire mining value chain will reconnect face-to-face and explore the many exciting opportunities that the mining sector of this West African powerhouse offers and while the progress that has been made thus far to kick-start the country’s mining sector will be showcased.

Proudly hosted by the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development and organised by the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN) in collaboration with PwC Nigeria and The Vuka Group, Nigeria Mining Week has been a committed promoter of what is widely regarded as the best next investment destination for mining houses and investors. The Abuja government, in particular, has been putting all its political will and weight behind the promotion of the sector and the event to gather investors, mining houses, thought-leaders, innovators and disruptors.

Minister: “Now is the best time”
Since assuming office in 2019, Nigeria’s Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arch. Olamilekan Adegbite, has been beating the country’s proverbial mining drum loudly and clearly, gracing many mining forums around the globe and communicating the message that the Nigerian mining sector is ready for investment and development, and the results are speaking for themselves with exciting new iron ore, bitumen and barite projects that are in active development or already up and running.

“Now is the best time to come into Nigeria,” Minister Adegbite says in a recent, exclusive interview with Mining Review Africa, the premier media partner of Nigeria Mining Week, “we have a lot of greenfields and brownfields. It's easier and cheaper to mine in Nigeria because a lot of the minerals have been untapped and are very close to the surface. Therefore, the cost is a lot cheaper”.

He added that Nigeria offers many incentives for would-be mining investors, including 100% ownership, tax holidays and duty free import of equipment. “So, this is the time to come and be one of the pioneers in Nigeria”.

“There is a lot of interest”
The ministry has also been marketing the data on the minerals in Nigeria, obtained through the NIMEP project (National Integrated Mineral Exploration Project). “And now we're beginning to get some good results on that. There is a lot of interest, people are coming to Nigeria. Just last year, a British firm made an investment of $50 million”.

The ministry has also initiated several programmes for the many artisanal miners in the country to identify them, encourage them to join cooperatives, provide free training on better mining methods and reclamation, as well as inexpensive funding to buy modern equipment. “There are a lot of incentives, and we're getting good results”, says the minister, “at the last count, we registered 400 cooperatives of these artisanal miners working in different areas in Nigeria”.

MAN: An economic platform to be proud of
The acting President of the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN), one of the official organisers of what will be the 7th edition of Nigeria Mining Week, Alh. Musa Muhammad, agrees that the country’s mining industry has made important strides forward, both for investors, mining houses and the people making a living off the nation’s valuable and varied mineral resources.

This positive progress includes:
- Appreciable increase in sectoral contributions to the GDP;
- Increased interest of foreign investors due to the verifiable geological data being generated by the National Integrated Mineral Exploration Project (NIMEP), of the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency;
- Digitalization of mineral titles administration by the Mining Cadastre Office;
- Development of cluster buying centres across the geopolitical zones; and
- Standardization of Nigerian barite to meet global specifications.

According to MAN’s Alh. Musa Muhammad: “While not ascribing the glory of these developments entirely to the direct outcomes of the annual Nigeria Mining Week, the various conversations and communiques emanating from this platform, and similar others, have been incubating the ideas for policy formulation and actions birthing these developments”.

He adds: “We hope this partnership, under the leadership of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, will continue to blossom, so that we will bequeath to our nation, an economic platform that we all can be proud of”.

“It’s not about being the best in the world, but the best for the world

“ESG has come a long way in the mining sector,” says Elodie Delagneau, event director of Africa Mining Forum; “for a long time it was considered a nice-to-have by mining companies. However, today, there is not a single investment discussion that can avoid the subject. It’s official, there has been a shift in the mindset of mining companies: it’s not about being the best in the world, but the best for the world.”

The ESG principles, environment, social and governance, provide the inspiration and over-arching theme for the upcoming Africa Mining Forum, a tailored mining investment platform for junior miners, mid-cap companies and sustainable technology solutions providers, taking place from 2–4 November 2021.

“From my perspective, the simple definition of ESG is ‘giving back’, says Laura-Jane Cornish, Editor-in-Chief of Mining Review Africa, key media partner in the event. “It is giving back to the environment, the communities you may have affected and the country you have chosen to settle in. And giving back should be a willing act of desire, not an obligation.”

The winners of Mining Review Africa’s Mining Elites in Africa 2022 publication will also be announced during the event with a Digital Awards Ceremony. Cornish explains: “these are industry influencers who are innovative in their leadership, improving the greater mining and minerals value chains on a regional level. They are contributing to the progress of mining, are a reflection of responsible corporate citizens and may be the contributing factor to helping a mining operation secure finance.”

Who’s who in African mining and investment
Some 50 international and regional industry pioneers and experts from mining houses and investment bodies, including Ivanhoe Mines, Base Titanium Limited, BlackRock Mining, Black Earth Minerals, African Development Bank, Gemfields Group, Luma Holding, International Council on Mining and Metals, PwC, CRU Group, Africa Practice, BloombergNEF and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), will take part in African Mining Forum.

 “How good governance translates into better lives for people”

“What we have known for a long time is that countries and jurisdictions that are better governed, tend to generate better outcomes for their people, especially when it comes to the mining sector.” This is according Rohitesh Dhawan, CEO of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and keynote speaker at the upcoming Africa Mining Forum from 2–4 November 2021

This tailored mining investment platform for junior miners, mid-cap companies and sustainable technology solutions providers, returns with a uniquely themed concept, with each of the ESG principles, Environment, Social and Governance, providing the inspiration for separately focused, digital sessions and activities during three days.

Our objective
Africa Mining Forum hosts executives and decision-makers to engage directly with key stakeholders, investors, and asset managers through the unique networking channels to identify promising projects and deploy capital in Africa’s mining. The event also provides extensive opportunities to industry technology and service providers to showcase and demonstrate their practical solutions.

The live, digital programme will include a daily commodities outlook, three exclusive keynote sessions, strategic spotlights, technology roundtables and A-Z investment guides for burgeoning mining countries on the continent.

Awards Ceremony
Earlier this year, two of the African mining industry’s most innovative brands joined forces, when Africa Mining Forum merged with Mining Review Africa’s Mining Elites in Africa publication with a Digital Awards Ceremony during which the 2022 edition winners of Mining Elites in Africa will be announced.

Getting governance right
The ICMM recently upped the ESG ante by publishing a series of enhanced Mining Principles which define good practice requirements for the mining and metals industry, aligned with its objective of the responsible sourcing and production of metals and minerals.

In an interview with Mining Review Africa, premium media partner for Africa Mining Forum, the ICMM CEO said: “Ultimately, governance is just a fancy word for management. When we look at the question of governance of natural resources and countries, we can ask, do countries have the right laws in place? And if they do, do they implement them consistently and effectively over time? We found from the research that the countries that have made the most progress over the last 25 years (this research looked 25 years back up until 2018), the countries that made the most progress have been the likes of Indonesia, Bolivia, Peru and Botswana.”

According to Dhawan, the common theme amongst all of these countries was developing the right policies and then executing them consistently and effectively over time. “If one of those two is not right, typically, you don't see the progress on social indicators, because what is what we were looking for, how good governance translates into better lives for people.”

Focus on Africa
According to Rohitesh Dhawan, the ICMM’s research had a special focus on Africa because they observed that since 1995, the number of countries that are resource dependent, has increased by 60%. “When we look at the 88 countries that are resource dependent today, they account for 30% of the world's population. So, a very large part of the world lives in countries that are resource dependent. And amongst those people, we have 450 million people that are living in poverty. So getting this right really matters. And getting this right really matters in an African context.”

More headline speakers will be joining Rohitesh Dhawan at Africa Mining Forum in November, including:

-  Jayne Mammatt, Partner and ESG Lead for Africa, PwC, South Africa

-  Harry Fisher, Senior Analyst l Battery Metals, CRU Group, Australia

-  Marta Dec, Senior Analyst l Base Metals, CRU Group, UK

-  Terence Lyons, CEO, TSC, Singapore
